The aspiraction was for this animation was to build on the success of our 2022 Caritas Advent Campaign #BeeThere and to increase engagement with the charity to build awareness with the end goal that they would see an increase in giving. We decided that moving from a more literal narrative and exploring the bees as characters would add depth to the campaign and allow us to bring in new authentic voices.

The Results

Our “Bee There” campaign saw levels of generosity which exceeded expectations by raising double what they saw the previous year.

On top of this, over the campaign period Caritas saw:

- 98,000 unique visitors on X
- 200,000 visitors on Facebook
- 4,000+ full views on YouTubeWeb traffic from social increase from 4% to 31%

This success was against the odds with the country facing a cost-of-living crisis after the pandemic. The incredible support and generosity received has helped Caritas to carry out their vital work to some of the most vulnerable people in Salford and Greater Manchester.

The full story

For the 2023 campaign we decided to go back to the drawing board with the bees that we created previously. We wanted them to look younger (not just smaller), we needed more visible variety to make them identifiable and most importantly to increase the complexity of their animation rigs to build in more expressions and speech.

Using live action video around the Greater Manchester area we combined the animated characters, voiced by children with real and relatable environments, reinforcing the message that this is a real issue affecting our communities in Greater Manchester. We did this by shooting various real locations, utilising a 360 degree camera, and light matching the bees into the environment so it felt like they were actually there. We also utilised 2D animation inspired by child drawings to help us visualise their dreams through their perspective.

In the final film you will see a combination of live action, 2D and 3D animation with sound coming from real children from the Greater Manchester area and sound design produced in house. This has been a fantastic project to work on with a real life-changing impact that has involved every team member at doodledo.
